Now It’s Dark Magazine
Last year I also gained some experience by working with Now It’s Dark Magazine to record videos of Columbus nightlife events. I recorded and edited 20+ videos for them covering events like DJ parties, clubber reunions, and of course musical performances. Markus joined me in the shooting process, shooting with the A7 while I shot using my T3i.
We did a few videos from this performance by Tom Cline. He was performing on the patio of Turtle Creek Tavern on a dreary, rainy day. Obviously, the surrounding aesthetics weren’t doing much to help the appearance of the video, so I elected once again to go with black and white as a solution. We used a Sony Cyber-shot as our third angle. I think it looks pretty cool.
Later that night we covered some musical performances at Woodlands Tavern. For some reason the stage lights were causing running horizontal stripes to appear on the video from both the A7 and T3i. It was too crowded at Woodlands to use a third stationary camera like we did at Turtle Creek. We attempted to record house audio but the sound technician didn’t adjust the levels after the first act, and we were forced to use camera audio instead.
We covered a number of DJ events for Now It’s Dark. These are videos I made with footage Markus and I got from one such event at The Social Bar and Lounge.
The first is a quick 45 second clip I edited together from the event.
The following two I made are both 3 minutes long and consist of mostly different footage.
The 2014 Fashion Meets Music Festival would be the last event I covered for Now It’s Dark. I went solo to the Cold War Kids headline performance expecting my Now It’s Dark press bass to get me access to the pit. Well, event staff didn’t consider me worthy for special access, so I was forced to record from the crowd. Luckily though, I had recently acquired my Sony A7s. The low light capabilities of the A7s allowed me to record the night show easily, and it’s huge sensor allowed me to crop in on the image to provide synthetic camera movement in post.
The first video I made for Now It’s Dark was a simple time lapse of people bustling through Comfest that year.
This is an introduction animation I made for Now It’s Dark using After Effects and personal footage I had of the Columbus skyline. I downloaded the logo from their website and used Photoshop to take out it’s solid background. I would use this animation to introduce all the videos I made for them.
